What Fruits Can a Bearded Dragon Eat?

Even though bearded dragons generally adore most fruits and would happily eat them for every meal, only 5 to 10 percent of an adult bearded dragon’s diet should consist of fruit. The remaining 90 percent of the diet should primarily consist of vegetable matter, such as dark, leafy greens and a small amount of protein-dense insects.

Insects and vegetables should be consumed in varying proportions for juvenile and infant bearded dragons, but fruit should make up the majority of their diet.

For the first year or two of their life, staple insects like crickets, butter worms, silkworms, and Dubia roaches will make up as much as 80% of their diet because they need a lot of insect protein for their fast metabolisms as they quickly develop into adult size.

The remaining 20% of their diet should consist primarily of plant material, such as vegetables, with a tiny quantity of fruit occasionally.

You can keep your lizard’s diet interesting and savory while also making your dragon happy by giving them a variety of fruits on occasion.

If you discover that they are a bit pickier with their vegetables, as many dragons are, a few small bits of fruit on top of their salad full of dark greens and veggies will encourage them to consume the complete meal.

Fruits Bearded Dragons Should Not Eat

Naturally, not all fruits are suitable for bearded dragons to eat. Never include any of the following in your beardie’s daily routine or diet:

Due to their high oxalate content, avocados are never advisable for bearded dragon intake. They become possibly poisonous to your small friend as a result.

In fact, the oxalate content is so high that even little amounts might cause health problems. They risk dying if they allow things to go worse.

When looking for a tasty treat for your beardie, avoid avocados at all costs. There are several non-life-threatening possibilities that kids will adore.

Although they don’t pose the same threat to beardies as avocados, olives still have certain drawbacks. These fruits don’t suit because of their excessive salt and fat content.

Citrus or Acidic Fruits
Bearded dragons should not be fed any citrus or acidic foods, including oranges, tomatoes, lemons, grapefruits, tangerines, and pineapples.

Due of their potential for extreme acidity, owners should completely avoid them. As a result, the bearded dragon’s digestive system and overall health are probably going to be compromised.

Runny stools and stomach problems may result from it. Therefore, it is ultimately a better idea to completely keep them away.

Calcium To Phosphorus Ratio

Always check the calcium to phosphorus ratio of any new fruit or vegetable you are thinking of adding to your bearded dragon’s diet.

Any ratio higher than 2:1 is considered optimum, which means that any fruit you give your dragon should give it at least twice as much calcium as phosphorus.

Any meal your dragon eats should always have more calcium than phosphorus, especially since phosphorus frequently binds to calcium and inhibits calcium absorption.

In addition, your dragon’s food must include a calcium supplement.

To make sure your dragon is getting enough calcium in their diet, get calcium powder from your neighborhood pet store and sprinkle it on any meal you feed it at least three to five times each week.

In contrast to most vegetables and other plant materials, which perform far better in this area with considerably higher ratios, fruits often have relatively low calcium to phosphorus ratios.

This is essentially the reason why your dragon’s diet should mostly consist of vegetables rather than fruits and why their vegetable intake should be far greater than their fruit intake.

There is no suitable staple fruit for your dragon due to the low calcium level of most fruits compared to their high phosphorus content.

If you are aware of their calcium to phosphorus ratios, many fruits may still be fed to your dragon in tiny amounts as part of a nutritious diet.

Benefits of Fruit for Bearded Dragons

Bearded dragons should only be given fruit in very little amounts, although there are several great advantages to doing so.

The majority of the fruits that Beardies eat are loaded with water, fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants.

A modest amount of fiber can help them digest food more easily, keep them from being constipated, and keep their systems in check.

Calcium and the vitamins D and C maintain them healthy and support the development of strong bones and regular growth.

Antioxidants are also essential for the health of a Bearded Dragon. Fruits include substances called antioxidants that stop free radicals from harming a beardie’s blood and tissue cells.

Finally, because they do not drink a lot of water, the hydration found in fruit is an excellent method for them to get the liquids they require.

Along with the aforementioned, fruit is also very advantageous for enhancing the flavor and thrill of your Bearded Dragon’s diet.

They have a reputation for being picky eaters, so adding some fruit may really brighten up a serving of leafy greens.

Nutritional Benefits of Apples For Bearded Dragons

Apples include vitamins A and C, which support development, eyesight, and a strong immune system in your dragon. In addition to being abundant in water and fiber, it also aids in proper digestion and hydration. Apples also provide iron, potassium, and carbs, which are healthy nutrients for dragons.

Apples have a lot of sugar and should not be a regular component of your dragon’s diet despite their excellent nutritional value. To avoid obesity, tooth decay, diabetes, and other health issues, it is preferable to indulge in it once each week as a treat.

The finest sources of nutrition for your bearded dragon are calcium dust or vitamin D3 supplements since they are the minerals it needs to be healthy and avoid developing metabolic bone disease.

Can Bearded Dragons Eat Apples?

Yes, apples (both red and green varieties) can be given to bearded dragons, but only if they are peeled, chopped into bite-sized chunks, and free of seeds and stems. Other fruits are also edible to bearded dragons, however not all of them will like them. You may occasionally need to gradually introduce new foods to your bearded dragon.

As omnivores, bearded dragons consume a wide range of fruits, vegetables, and meat/protein sources, including insects. As infants and young adults, they will need to consume more crickets and other feeder insects as a source of protein to support their growth, but as adults, bearded dragons need to consume more greens and vegetables.

It’s really a good idea to give your beardie applesauce or apple baby food to aid with digestion! However, when it comes to fruits, always be sure to stay away from the softer, sugarier varieties since they might ferment and harm a beardie’s teeth.

Types of Fruits Bearded Dragons Enjoy

Can Bearded Dragons Eat Apple Seeds?

No, seeds will be extremely difficult for bearded dragons to digest and may even result in gut impaction, which can be a deadly disease when the digestive track is stopped. Before giving your beardie an apple, make sure it doesn’t still have any seeds or peel on it.

Risk Factors Of Feeding Too Much Fruit

If you use almost any type of fruit as a main item in your bearded dragon’s diet, they will soon gain weight and become sluggish because the majority of fruits are extremely heavy in natural sugars.

Sugar damages teeth and contributes to tooth decay.

At first, your lizard won’t likely complain, but over time, the extra weight and dental problems may lead to a number of uncomfortable and sometimes fatal health problems.

Think of fruit as your lizard’s dessert.

Although they may be delighted to see it in their meal, there is always a risk of getting too much of a good thing.

The high oxalate content, commonly known as oxalic acid, of many fruits is an unwelcome frequent trait. Oxalic acid combines with calcium and hinders calcium absorption, rather than causing it to be passed as a waste product in your dragon’s feces.

All stages of a bearded dragon’s life, from infancy to adulthood, require a lot of calcium. It keeps their metabolisms in good shape and maintains the strength of their bones and muscles.

Even if the fruit does contain a reasonable amount of the mineral, a large portion of it will be wasted as it bonds with the fruit’s oxalic acid.

Weak, brittle bones, metabolic bone disease, and several other unpleasant health conditions are all promptly brought on by a calcium deficit.

Since most fruits are rather wet, they have a high water content. While drinking enough of water is great for keeping your bearded dragon hydrated, doing so too frequently may result in an upset stomach, runny feces, and dehydration.

Citrus fruits and other extremely acidic fruits must also be avoided since they will upset your lizard’s stomach and result in diarrhea.

For appropriate hydration, always provide your dragon access to freshwater; ideally, this should be in the form of a small dish that you clean and replenish each day.

The ideal water bowl is broad, strong, and low to the ground. There are several options for food and water bowls at the majority of pet retailers.

No matter how old your dragon is, all they need to flourish is a tiny piece of fruit provided once in a while.

How Often Can Bearded Dragons Have Strawberries?

Both humans and bears benefit greatly from the high nutritional content of strawberries. In addition, compared to other fruits, strawberries have a lower phosphorus to calcium ratio, while having a greater phosphorus content than calcium. (More to follow on that.)

Because they are so soft and the seeds are too little to be a choking hazard, strawberries are also very simple for dragons to consume. Of course, you shouldn’t give the stems to your dragon.

Because of these characteristics and depending on the other fruits that are on their feeding plan, bearded dragons can have strawberries as a treat once a week or less frequently.

To attempt and get their dragon to eat more greens, some dragon keepers like to mix small pieces of strawberry into a dark, leafy green salad or with other vegetables. This is a common and effective way to use fruit, but you should use it sparingly.

Bearded dragons adore strawberries, and they may become so enamored with their sweet flavor that they turn away from the veggies they so desperately require. Once an issue starts, it might be challenging to stop it!
