Dinosaur With Long Claws

Dinosaurs changed to suit their surroundings and survive over the many centuries they lived. As a result, seeking a dinosaur species with a hunchback and long claws that was also an herbivore (a plant-eater) is really bizarre yet fascinating.

What on earth could that weird long-clawed creature be? Thousands of distinct species existed throughout the Mesozoic epoch, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth, and may be seen today in all shapes and sizes.

It’s worth noting that the Therizinosaurus was initially thought to be some ancient sea turtle without the shell when it was discovered in Mongolia by paleontologists. The fact that this theropod had the longest claws of any previously discovered theropod dinosaur was particularly surprising.

This is one post you won’t want to miss if you’re interested in learning more about the Therizinosaurus. We’ll learn more about the Therizinosaurus’ claws, its environment in Cretaceous Mongolia, and other interesting facts about this dinosaur species in this article. Keep reading, there’s more to come!

Are Therizinosaurus Real?

It is a genus of huge therizinosaurid that existed in Asia around 70 million years ago, in the Nemegt Formation, which is now located in what is now Mongolia. This collection contains just one Therizinosaurus cheloniformis species.

About Therizinosaurus

During the late Cretaceous Period (77 million years ago), Therizinosaurus lived as a dinosaur. It was a 33-foot-long, 10-foot-tall creature with a 3-ton weight that lived during the Mesozoic era.

These creatures are recognized for having ferocious claws on their front legs and having really tiny heads that sat atop extremely long necks. It possesses some of the world’s biggest claws, measuring two feet in length.

A Soviet-Mongolian fossil expedition in Southwest Mongolia discovered Therizinosaurus for the first time in 1948. Several claws were discovered during this expedition, which the researchers assumed belonged to a turtle-like reptile.

Anatoly Konstantinovich Rozhdestvensky declared this species to be a dinosaur rather than a turtle in 1970, thus maintaining the popular misconception.

However, this dinosaur has attracted a great deal of attention. Some paleontologists disagree whether this dinosaur was an herbivore or a carnivore because the fossils of this dinosaur have been discovered without the skull.

It has been argued that since this dinosaur was a member of the therapod family, it must have been an herbivore, but this claim has been disputed by paleontologists. The truth is that no one knows what this dinosaur ate.

Why Was Therizinosaurus Called The Claw?

Since the claws were discovered with huge, flat bones and looked like those of certain turtles, workers assumed they belonged to a big turtle at first. In the movie E.R., the character of Sam (played by Jimmy neutron) After the great Soviet paleontologist, Lyakhov, Ross named the specimen Therizin cheloniformis (“turtle-like scythe reptile”). The surname Malleyev is derived from the term “malley.”

Despite This, it Was (Probably) An Herbivore

These creatures look like they were constructed to chop and dice hapless victims, with fingers that seem to belong in a horror movie. Its cousins, on the other hand, had tiny tooth structures that evolved to chew vegetation. (Scientists have yet to find a Therizinosaurus cranium.)

So what are those terrifying numbers? They may have assisted the dinosaurs in dragging down thick tree branches before mealtime, according to theory. Move on to bullet point nine for a more detailed explanation.

Is Therizinosaurus A Sauropod?

Therizinosaurus was not discovered as a dinosaur until 1970. Maleev’s fossils were re-evaluated by Anatoly Konstantinovich Rozhdestvensky that year, and the rib was determined to be from a sauropod dinosaur, but the hand bones and claws were determined to be from a different species.

Therizinosaurus Had to Cope With a Huge T. rex Cousin.

Some experts believe that Tarbosaurus bataar and Tyrannosaurus rex were the same genus (despite the fact that most others disagree). Therizinosaurus’ Mongolian range was once inhabited by the former predator, and this herbivore’s terrible claws seem more crucial in light of the fact.

Here’s a fantastic (Greek language) trailer from the 2002 documentary Chased by Dinosaurs, which features these ferocious foes spectacularly squared off.

What Did the Therizinosaurus Use Its Claws For?

A therizinosaurid, or collection of dinosaurs known as scythe lizards, is thought to be the Therizinosaurus. The Therizinosaurus is instantly recognizable because of how it looks. T is a symbol that represents the letter T. The claws of cheloniformis, the sole recognized species of Therizinosaurus, were incredibly huge and long, the back was hunched, and it walked on its hind legs.

Some Therizinosaurs Were Covered in Feathers

As seen in some wonderfully preserved fossils, China’s Beipiaosaurus possessed multiple layers of primitive feathers. Beipiaosaurus didn’t fly, so this plumage was most likely used to keep it warm and attract the opposite sex. Its limb proportions ruled out flying.

About Those Giant Claws

These claws are depicted as chicken feet rather than digits in artwork of the species, which gives them a Velociraptor-like appearance. The presence of those massive long claws is undeniable, however whether or not what the Therizinosaurus’ claws really look like is debatable.

Each claw was roughly 1 meter long and measured 3.2 feet. The claws were also quite hard and inflexible. Claws greater than the Therizinosaurus, or any other animal, are claimed only to exist in dinosaurs.

So why did the Therizinosaurus earn the moniker scythe lizard because of its lengthy claws? The Therizinosaurus’ claws must have aided it immensely in tearing its victim’s flesh and devouring its innards, don’t you think?

So, we’re more confident that the Therizinosaurus couldn’t do it than we are of whether it could. The Therizinosaurus claws were employed to gather vegetation in a much more delicate manner.

Remember that the Therizinosaurus was an herbivore, and it had no desire in pursuing down tiny dinosaurs or killing animals. Scientists have examined the possibility that it was a carnivorous dinosaur, given its enormous claws, but have confirmed that it was a plant-eater.

It would grab leaves from trees and venture through its environment (more about the Therizinosaurus habitat in the following section). We don’t believe this dinosaur had any difficulties collecting leaves from trees or picking fallen leaves from the earth because it stood at an average height of 15 feet.

The cupped hands of the Therizinosaurus could grip onto leaves until it wanted to stop and eat, thanks to its enormous claws that could penetrate through them. (Source)

What Did The Therizinosaurus Eat?

Theropods were a powerful group of predators that hunted, killed, and ripped apart their prey with their razor-sharp teeth and claws. It is unknown how long therizinosaurus has adapted to eating plants, despite the fact that it appears to have done so. The beast digested the plants that it had taken from its enormous belly.

Therizinosaurus Was Originally Mistaken for a Huge, Turtle-Like Reptile.

The creature looked substantially like a contemporary sea turtle, according to Russian paleontologist Evgeny Aleksandrovich Malayev in 1954. Its unique forelimbs, he explained, were “powerful swimming organs” with “cutting aquatic vegetation-designed claws.”

Did Therizinosaurus Live With Tarbosaurus?

Velociraptor, Mononykus, Protoceratops, Saurolophus, and Therizinosaurus were among the first species to join its ecosystem’s largest and apex predators. Tarbosauruses were originally found in Mongolia in 1946.

Therizinosaurus Habitat and Anatomy

Claws are the most well-known feature of the Therizinosaurus, but it is more than just that. Let’s learn more about this giant with habitat and anatomy, as well as its origins.

What Did Therizinosaurus Evolve?

This group of dinosaurs evolved from swift predators to sluggish herbivores. The image of Therizinosaurus cheloniformis will be presented as a consequence of the modification. To date, it is the weirdest Dinosaur discovered. These unusual creatures have perplexed paleontologists for years.

It’s Part of a Formerly-Baffling Family

Scientists were at a loss for how to classify the strange Therizinosaurids when it became evident that they were really dinosaurs. Could they have evolved from Brachiosaurus, a huge, long-necked sauropod from Jurassic Park? Did they, along with Stegosaurus and Triceratops, belong to the “bird-hipped” order of dinosaurs?

Closer examination revealed that therizinosaurs belonged to a group known as theropods, which included carnivores such as Tyrannosaurus and Velociraptor. Despite their plant-guzzling habits.

Today’s pandas are considered members of the mammalian “carnivora” order, as strange as this may sound.

A Nest of Therizinosaur Eggs Was Found in 2013

Every day, we learn more about dinosaurs, both in the present and the future. Another important finding about the Therizinosaurus was made just a few years ago, in 2013. That year, Yoshitsugu Kobayashi of Hokkaido University came to the Gobi Desert to study the geography.

This is detailed in the Yahoo! article. A Therizinosaurus nest with 17 egg clutches was discovered by Kobayashi in a news article. The 73rd Annual Society of Vertebrate Paleontology conference included an address by Kobayashi on this important discovery. The roughened shell texture of each egg is roughly 5 inches in diameter.

The Therizinosauria were enormous animals that were previously known as Segnosaurs. Even before dinosaurs became extinct 65 million years ago, paleontologists believe the group began to die out.

During the Late Cretaceous, just the Therizinosaurus and Nanshiungosaurus were able to keep the Therizinosauria alive.

Therizinosaurus Habitat

In the Late Cretaceous Period, the Therizinosaurus lived for approximately 70 million years. The Nemegt Formation, commonly known as the Nemegtskaya Svita, is its current habitat. River channel sediments make up part of this geological structure, which is part of the Gobi Desert. Birds, fauna, crocodilians, turtles, fish, and other dinosaurs have also been discovered in this location in addition to the Therizinosaurus.

Floodplains, streams, and ancient lakes were the habitats of Cretaceous Mongolia and, in particular, the Gobi Desert. The Therizinosaurus thrived in a humid, even sub-tropical, environment at the time, as evidenced by the sandstone and mudstone found across the Nemegt Formation today.

During the Cretaceous Period, it is thought that conifer and deciduous woods covered Mongolia in forest. What Are the Different Dinosaur Habitats? 9 Places Where They Lived is a topic I wrote about.

Araucariaceae conifer trees, some of the world’s oldest conifers, would have thrived in this Gobi Desert environment. Throughout the Cretaceous and Jurassic periods, they diversified primarily.

The land that became the Nemegt Formation most likely had a towering tree canopy because of these conifers’ height. The dinosaurs and creatures that lived here were likely to have had a lot of food, according to paleontologists.

Has Therizinosaurus Skull Been Found?

These creatures, which first appear in slasher flicks, seem to have been created with the intention of slicing and dicing unlucky victims. When they were young, most of its relatives had tiny leaf-shaped teeth that chewed on leaves. Scientists have yet to find the skull of a Therizinosaurus.

Therizinosaurus Anatomy

In adulthood, the Therizinosaurus might have been 15 feet tall and 33 feet long. It weighed more than 5 tons, making it a heavyweight dinosaur species. Its body was broad, and its beak was tough (rather than a mouth). In addition, the Therizinosaurus possessed a lengthy neck that allowed it to climb high into the trees and seize leaves it hadn’t gathered.

The Therizinosaurus had only four toes, each of which carried a lot of weight, similar to sauropodomorphs. The Therizinosaurus is a therizinosaurid and not a sauropodomorph, so it’s interesting to consider.

The Tarbosaurus, which also roamed the Gobi Desert lands during the Late Cretaceous Period, might have avoided eating the Therizinosaurus since it was so big. The Tarbosaurus knew to stay away from the Therizinosaurus and seek out prey of comparable size since it was taller.

The skull of a Therizinosaurus was relatively tiny, although it was rounder and more rounded than the rest of its body. Unguals, or distal bones that were squeezed to the side and exceedingly straight, could also be found in this species.

Therizinosaurus feathers were also thought to be present by paleontologists. The Therizinosaurus is depicted with feathers covering its entire body, which is a amusing notion but not completely accurate, as seen in some artistic drawings. As per fossil evidence, the feathers were strewn more sparsely over the body. (Source)

Paleontologists Weren’t Sure What the Therizinosaurus Was When First Discovered

It can take years, if not decades, for paleontologists to put a complete picture together when they discover dinosaur fossils. In certain cases, the complete picture isn’t available.

Paleontologists were perplexed by the Therizinosaurus fossils, to put it mildly. In 1948, researchers searching the Gobi Desert for dinosaur bones unearthed the first fossils. Only a few Therizinosaurus bones were discovered, but they were enough to identify the species.

Check out Gobi Desert Dinosaurs – The Amazing Fossil Discoveries, which I wrote a full article about.

Paleontologists initially thought the Therizinosaurus was a kind of turtle because they had such a small number of fossils to work with. Palaeontologists started to see a new image of the Therizinosaurus species as more pieces of the puzzle, such as forelimbs and hindlimbs, were put together.
